Finalising a split is a legal decision, and you will probably find that you will need a lawyer’s help. Lawyers cost a fortune, so try not to have a spat with your ex that you don’t need to have, if everyone can be grown up about it, life will be simpler. Also, don’t be tempted to use your lawyer as a psychotherapist, psychotherapy is cheaper.
The important thing is to be sure that you are happy with the solicitor you have chosen, and the fees you are going to have to pay. Do not assume your ex will have to pay the fees either, that is not necessarily going to happen.
If it is possible to agree a fee upfront, then that can help you budget more effectively, as any split will lead to some financial hardship, even in the short term. But most lawyers will not do this, as they are not able to tell how complicated the split will be.
