PERSONAL debt in the UK stood at £1,459 billion at the end of last year, including £227 billion of consumer credit lending, leaving the average household debt including mortgages at £57,888.
Excluding mortgages, this figure falls to £9,016.
The average adult in the UK owes £30,226 including mortgages, which is a third more than the average national wage of just under £25,000.
However, if the Government’s debt is included in the debt figures for each household, then the figures expected in 2014-15 without any intervention, will mean each household owes a whopping £116,340.
The figures, calculated by Credit Action, show just how much debt the UK is burdened with as we start the New Year.

The average outstanding mortgage for the 11.1m households who currently have mortgages now stands at £110,951.
Average consumer borrowing via credit cards, motor and retail finance deals, overdrafts and unsecured personal loans has risen to £4,708 per average UK adult at the end of November 2009.
Citizens Advice is dealing with 9,300 new debt problems each day.
There is £181m paid in personal interest each day.
A property is repossessed every 11.2 minutes in the UK.
2,093 people are being made redundant each day.
1,000 people seek some form of formal debt rescheduling plan every day.
The Government national debt increases by £4,385 a second.
