Men's Health Is Worrying Women
By Alison Steed
AROUND a third of women fear that their fellas are suffering from ‘manorexia’ according to research from a leading UK fashion website.
Women are attributing the rise in anorexia among their partners and husbands to peer-group pressure, and that they are increasingly feeling the need to lose weight to live up to the image of Hollywood A-listers.
Jilly Tovey managing director of MyCelebrityFashion, which undertook the survey, said: "This is a deeply concerning trend that needs addressing in order to make sure that people get the help and support that they need. MyCelebrityFashion has gone against the fashion industry before and spoken out against the negative aspect of the fashion world and the effect it can have on young people across the UK and we are keen to keep raising the issue until people take notice.
"Our own site has fashionable clothing for every size, from the controversial size zero right through to plus sizes and we try to work hard with our retailers to make sure they make items of fashionable clothing that reflect the changing sizes and nature of the UK population".
Worryingly, 37 per cent of the more than 3,000 women who took part in the survey said they had friends who they thought were anorexic, and more than four in 10 of the respondents said they had subjected themselves to a crash diet at least four times a year. Just over one in 10 had been on more than 10 crash diets last year.
More than two thirds of the women responding said they regularly skipped meals on a daily basis to lose weight. Less than a quarter of the respondents were actually happy with their weight and appearance.
MyCelebrityFashion is now looking to link up with a leading eating disorder charity for 2009 and will be placing a link to an eating order advice helpline and website on its own website in order to try and offer help to those who are affect or know someone who is affected.
