The PAYD scheme, involves the insurer installing a black box into your car that registers the number of miles you drive - and at what time - and charges accordingly. For example, as most accidents happen with young drivers at night, motorists between 16 and 23 will be charged less for driving outside the hours of 11pm to 6am.
