Retraining

Depending on how old you are when you get made redundant, you may find it difficult to get another job, especially if you work in a sector that has been hard hit. So are there any grants that are available to help you finance some retraining?

In some cases, particularly with larger employers, some form of retraining may be part of the redundancy package. However, there are also government-funded training and grants available through your local benefits office which will have details of the range of New Deal schemes to get people into work.

New Deal includes a range of services targeted at the needs of particular groups trying to get work, such as the under-25s, lone parents and those aged 50 and more. Within the first two years of getting a job you can get a training grant to update skills or learn new ones at a local college. Up to £1,200 is available for training to do with the job, or up to £300 for general training or courses. You can also use training grants to help set up your own business.
