Facebook Leads One In Five To Divorce
By Alison Steed
FACEBOOK, the social networking site, is being cited in one in five divorce petitions, according to research by Divorce-Online.
The company scanned its database for instances when the word “Facebook” was used in its divorce records, and it appeared in 989 of 5,000 divorce petitions, according to Mark Keenan, managing director of Divorce-Online.
He said: “I had heard from my staff that there were a lot of people saying they had found out things about their partners on Facebook and I decided to see how prevalent it was. I was really surprised to see 20 per cent of all the petitions containing references to Facebook. The most common reason seemed to be people having inappropriate sexual chats with people they were not supposed to".
Many people end up getting divorced just after Christmas, as the time spent with the family can help them make the decision, or they simply wait to stop their children from suffering during the festive season.
