All of the assets owned by both parties are taken into consideration when you split, and that includes any pension that has been built up during the marriage. Pension splitting is complicated so often the couple will agree to split their assets so that the house is given in compensation for the pension entitlement, and so on. It is one way of achieving a clean break, which is what many couples are after when their love turns sour.
