With ASU policies, the insurer will want evidence about the nature of the accident or sickness from a doctor, as well as documentation confirming your unemployment and the reason for it – as they will not pay for someone who has intentionally made themselves unemployed!
If your claim is accepted, there will normally be a deferment period of 30, 60 or 90 days after the incident before payments will be made to you. Normally, these payments will continue for a period of 12 months. With some policies, however, you may be paid in full after the deferment period.
Another thing to watch is that you will usually only be able to make a claim on the policy some time after you have taken it out. This is usually at least 60 days for accident or sickness and 180 days for unemployment.
