In some cases, particularly with larger employers, some form of retraining may be part of the redundancy package. However, there are also government-funded training and grants available through your local benefits office which will have details of the range of New Deal schemes to get people into work.
New Deal includes a range of services targeted at the needs of particular groups trying to get work, such as the under-25s, lone parents and those aged 50 and more. Within the first two years of getting a job you can get a training grant to update skills or learn new ones at a local college. Up to £1,200 is available for training to do with the job, or up to £300 for general training or courses. You can also use training grants to help set up your own business.
