Women Are Savvy Drivers Who Know Their Cars
By Alison Steed
WOMEN are savvier about motoring than many men give them credit for, as the average woman considers her car to be more important than clothes, make-up or holidays.
Nearly half of us discuss cars with our friends, according to research from female motor insurance specialist Diamond, and two thirds of women watch the BBC’s Top Gear.
Colour, it seems, is low down our list of priorities when choosing a car too, with just 3 per cent choosing a car based on its colour. Economy and price were both key elements considered for a fifth of women when choosing their wheels, and nearly a sixth would be influenced by the make and model.
Sian Lewis, managing director of Diamond said: "Our research shows many of the stereotypes you hear about women drivers are very much outdated and untrue.
"Today's generation of women drivers keep up to date with the motoring world, make informed motoring choices and take efforts to look after their wheels."
Three quarters of women know how to check the oil, water and tyre pressure on their car, and a quarter of us make these checks before a long journey.
A sixth of us keep a torch and atlas in the glovebox, while just 8 per cent make sure they have make-up in there.
